Our Approach

"Nothing is more the child of art than a garden." - Sir Walter Scott

Sean takes what he calls a ‘visual story-telling’ approach to garden design. One of the ways he creates narrative in garden making is through the exploration of ‘appropriateness’. Is tentative, intuitive thinking the key to unlocking the garden’s story or are bold, decisive strokes needed instead? Is it more appropriate that the surrounding landscape defines the garden, or should an idea be imposed on the landscape? The response to these kinds of questions will define the design approach.

"My approach is intuitive, not formulaic."

Whatever the approach, Sean designs in response to a place, the environment and the needs of the client. He does not make or follow strict rules, but rather takes his inspiration from a broad range of sources, and takes his lead from nature. Plants take the leading role, while hard landscaping is finely detailed and unobtrusive.

"Garden design can run on applied common sense, taste, plantsmanship, sensitivity to architecture … and vision, but without art it pegs along with a stitch in its side."
